Answering Your Online Teaching FAQs!

I began my job as an online English teacher in April 2019, as I prepared to travel to Europe. I wanted to be able to work while traveling, and having just attained my TEFL certification, teaching online seemed like the perfect fit. Little did I know, I would come to LOVE it. My students are great, and the financial stability it provides me is such a blessing!

I have spoken out about my job on my Instagram, and I have since received many questions about how it works. I wish I had known about it sooner, so I hope to provide you with the information you need to help get you started! :)

(*NOTE: VIPKid provides me with a “referral code”. In exchange for providing you with information and helping you through the hiring process, I receive monetary compensation! All opinions are entirely my own, I would never promote something I couldn’t stand behind! THANK YOU!)

1.Do I need a Bachelor’s degree and/or teaching experience?

For VIPKid and for a lot of other companies, yes. For VIPKid, they require a bachelor’s degree (in any subject) and at least one year of experience working with kids (teaching, mentoring, babysitting, camp counselor, etc.) But don’t be discouraged if you don’t have this experience! There are some companies who do not require it!

2. Do I need a Bachelor’s in education/Do I need a teaching certificate?

No! My bachelor’s degree is in Communication. I have a TEFL Certificate, but it is not a requirement! You may get paid more per class if you have a certificate though.

3. Do you have to speak Chinese?

Not at all! You will only speak to your students in English. It may sound super complex, but with the set-up of the class, it is not necessary for you to speak Chinese! You will learn to communicate in other ways (TPR (body movements), props, demonstration).

4. How many hours per week do I need to commit?

With VIPKid, there is no maximum or minimum number of hours you have to teach. When I first started, I only wanted to teach 2-4 classes a day (1-2 hours) 5 days a week. Now I teach 9-11 classes a day, sometimes 6 days a week. You get to choose your own hours!

5. What times would I teach?

This is dependent on your location/time zone. When I was in Arizona, I worked pretty early hours (5:00am-7:00am). Pacific coast “prime hours” or the most popular times are between 3:00am-7:00am on weekdays and on weekends, it also includes evenings from 5:00pm-8:00pm. People on the East coast have it a little easier. To know for sure what time you’re looking at, the most popular times are 6:00pm-9:00pm Beijing time!

Being in Europe has its advantages, as now I can teach from 10:00am-4:00pm! Hehehe.

6. Do you get a steady income from teaching English online?

My short answer is yes! But not everyone has the same experience. At first, it will probably not be steady. It wasn’t for me, and isn’t for most people. Over the last few months, I have built up my clientele (of students) by providing educational, yet entertaining classes. Offering a high quality class will inspire parents to book your classes more often, which leads to more steady income!

7. How much money do you make?

For VIPKid, the pay range is $7-$9 USD per class. In addition to this base rate, there are bonuses you can earn. 2 of the bonuses are fairly easy to obtain! For example, if you are given a base rate of $8 per class, and you score both of the $1 bonuses, your pay per class comes out to $10/class.

8. How long are the classes? And how many students do you teach at one time?

Each class is 25-28 minutes long. Essentially, in one hour you could teach 2 classes. With this in mind, as well as the information from Question #7, you would calculate your hourly rate as your base rate (ex. $8) x2! So $16 an hour. With VIPKid, you will ONLY teach one student at a time! All lessons are one-on-one.

9. What are the ages of the kids you teach?

There are different “levels” that students can be enrolled in, based on their English abilities. I teach mainly lower level students, so the ages range from 4-10 years old (usually). Sometimes I will have a 14 year old or a 3 year old, too!

10. Sounds great! Could you help me get hired?

Yes, I sure can!! From the success I’ve found on VIPKid, I know exactly what recruiters and parents are looking for when looking for a new online English teacher. And (thankfully) VIPKid pays me to help you! So it is literally my job to provide you with information and tools you need to be successful!

I always feel bad when I am asking someone “too many” questions, but don’t you feel better knowing that someone pays me to answer them? Hahaha
