What Happened When I Stopped Running for One Week

Talk about a classic case of not taking your own advice. I recently published a post all about how to stay positive when you are working like crazy (read here), and one of my tips was to stay as active as possible. This past week, I went from running 4-5 times a week to not exercising at all. My excuse? I felt like I was too busy, too tired, too this, too that, to go run. Here’s exactly what happened:

And let me tell you, I wasn’t sitting around stuffing my face with salads. I constantly felt the urge to eat, especially when it came to indulging in sweets and other junk food. Hello, In n Out, I’m looking right at you.

My digestion rate slowed down drastically

I typically have a pretty fast metabolism, so this was one of the most noticeable side effects for me. It felt as though every time I ate, by the next time I went to eat, I still felt like I was carrying around the food from my last meal. I felt heavy and very sluggish, even hours after eating.

I was a bit of a cranky pants

“A bit” as an, I am so sorry if you had to endure my wrath/mental breakdowns. It was like walking around with a cloud over my head and a little gremlin on my back. Actually, I take that back. I may have just turned into a gremlin myself, lol. Any little thing felt like the end of the world, and I physically could not help but become emotional at every instance.

Breakouts

In places I rarely break out in, and during a time of the month that I don’t expect them. I’m definitely one to get the occasional PMS breakout, but this pattern was very atypical for me.

My anxiety levels sky-rocketed

Which made even the simplest of tasks, such as sleeping, so difficult to do. With increased anxiety came a decrease in sleep, which resulted in even more emotional and physical stress on my body.

In conclusion:

Let’s just say, that my first run getting me back in the game (on Sunday) was actually magical. While I definitely don’t feel back to 100% just yet, I know that this last week was enough motivation to get myself back out there.

While this post isn’t as positive and uplifting as I like things to be on here, I hope it helps you to understand that we all fall into ruts. If you are struggling with any of the aforementioned side effects of stress, I urge you to find a workout routine that works for you and your lifestyle.

    That’s crazy how your body dramatically changed in one week away from running. I totally need to start working out more regularly and consistently. I’m hoping that my body changes to be better and be more energized

      I know, its crazy right?! It can be so hard to be consistent with all that life seems to throw at us sometimes, but a little bit of exercise is better than none, right? You go girl, you can do it! xo

    I hear you, girlfriend! I’ve been in the same boat recently. I’m all for making healthy eating choices because I know how much better I feel when I do. But for the last few months, I’ve been eating all the chips, fries, fast food, candy, etc. And I’m seeing the results! Man, sometimes it’s hard to take our own advice.

      It really can be so difficult! It makes me feel better though when I know its something we’re all dealing with! Just gotta keep doing the best we can and reminding ourselves that it IS worth it to stay healthy, but everything in moderation! ๐Ÿ™‚ Thanks for stopping by, Lauren!
